Digital X-Rays

Digital X-rays are the modern standard in dental imaging β€” replacing traditional film with an electronic sensor that captures images instantly on a computer screen.

Why we use digital imaging

Digital X-rays let us view and enlarge images immediately, making it easier to catch problems early. Just as important, they reduce radiation exposure by 80–90% compared to traditional film X-rays, and eliminate the chemical film-developing process altogether.

What X-rays can reveal

  • Abscesses or cysts
  • Bone loss
  • Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
  • Decay between teeth, not visible during a visual exam
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Problems below the gum line or inside a tooth

Safety & frequency

We're all exposed to natural background radiation every day, and digital X-rays add very little to that. We only take the X-rays we need and use protective shielding to minimize exposure further. New patients typically receive a full set of X-rays (valid for 3–5 years), with routine bite-wing X-rays once or twice a year to catch new issues early.

Frequently asked questions

Yes — digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays, and we only take them as clinically needed.
This varies by patient, but a routine check is typically recommended once a year, with a more complete series every few years.
Tell us if you are or may be pregnant. Dental X-rays use very low radiation and we use protective shielding, but we routinely postpone non-urgent imaging until after delivery and take only what’s necessary if you need urgent care.
Yes. If you’ve had images taken recently, ask your previous office to email them to info@koladentistry.com before your visit and we may not need to retake them.
