Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a deep-cleaning treatment that removes the plaque and tartar causing inflammation in your gums and the bone beneath them — effective for both gingivitis and moderate-to-severe gum disease.

Why it matters

  • Protects your overall health — bacteria from gum infections have been linked to conditions like heart disease and lung infections
  • Protects your teeth — once gum pockets exceed 3mm, bacteria can multiply and gradually destroy the tissue and bone that hold your teeth in place
  • Improves your smile by removing surface stains along with tartar and plaque
  • Freshens breath by clearing away the bacteria that cause persistent odor

The process

After a thorough exam and X-rays, we may apply a local anesthetic depending on your comfort and the amount of buildup. Scaling uses specialized (often ultrasonic) instruments to remove calculus and plaque from the tooth and root surfaces. Root planing smooths the root surface itself, removing bacteria and toxins so your gums can heal and reattach.

Aftercare

We may apply an antibiotic directly to deeper pockets, and we'll schedule a follow-up to check your healing — with additional treatment if any pockets remain deeper than 3mm.
